CoolSculpting Featured on Dr. Oz

Featured in a recent segment on “The Dr. Oz Show,” CoolSculpting® is the latest in non-invasive fat-reduction technology. Developed by Harvard scientists and doctors, CoolSculpting utilizes the power of cooling to eliminate areas of unwanted fat. By applying extreme cold to the treatment area(s) CoolSculpting works similarly to liposuction without the needles, drugs, or suctioning cannulas, and patients can return to work right after the treatment.

Dr. Oz’s guest demonstrates the ease and comfort the CoolSculpting treatment provides patients. Lasting only an hour per treatment area, CoolSculpting can be performed during lunch and patients can return to work, no recovery time needed. Most patients see results in the first three weeks, with full results visible after two to four months. Most patients see a reduction of up to 40% of the fat in the treatment area(s) with two treatments.

CoolSculpting is not for everyone, though. The ideal CoolSculpting candidate is someone who adheres to a healthy diet and exercise routine but still has small pockets of persistent fat around the waist, abdomen, and/or legs. CoolSculpting can help reduce the fat in the treatment area to smooth and refine the silhouette.

Specifically, the treatment works by cooling the fat cells beyond their range of viability, essentially killing them. The lymphatic system works over the next two to four months to eliminate the damaged fat cells and reduce the total amount of fat in the treatment area(s).

CoolSculpting is revolutionary because it allows patients the fat reduction they’d expect from more invasive, plastic surgery procedures with no incisions, no recovery time, and little to no side effects. Slim Your Shape with Dermatology Associates of Atlanta’s Newest Fat Reduction Technology: SlimLipo™

dermatology associates of atlantaAt some point or another, you’ve probably heard the phrase “stubborn fat,” or fat that doesn’t seem to budge no matter how much an individual diets or exercises. Since 1986, Dr. Edmond Griffin and Dr. Scott Karempelis have been taking care of their patients “stubborn fat” by providing safe and effective outpatient tumescent liposuction utilizing both traditional and cutting edge techniques to suit individual cosmetic needs. While liposuction results are greatly influenced by the surgeon’s skill, fat reduction is further facilitated by ever-advancing body contouring technology.  In the 25 years our surgeons have performed liposuction procedures, we’ve watched and worked with advancing liposuction technology. For years we worked with ultrasonic techniques that claimed to have an edge on traditional liposuction, but now lasers can more precisely target the unwanted fat for easier, safer, and more effective surgical removal. With so many laser liposuction systems on the market, it’s difficult to know which laser assisted machine you should choose.  That is why, after thorough research, Dermatology Associates of Atlanta is excited to offer SlimLipo™ to our Atlanta patients.  Despite its novelty, this technology has already become the top choice of laser liposuction methods by many surgeons.

SlimLipo™ laser assisted liposuction does not deemphasize the importance of selecting a properly experienced surgeon, but acts more as the “icing on the cake”:  resulting in faster healing, less drainage, and most importantly, skin tightening post- procedure. Our specialty center team at the Laser Institute of Georgia has long known the dramatic collagen production potential of laser skin resurfacing.  Now, the combination skin tightening and fat reduction benefits of SlimLipo™ laser liposuction allows our board certified dermatological surgeons to use micro cannulas to remove fat with less bruising, smaller incisions, less blood loss, and the best part—less downtime and faster healing. › Continue reading

Your Liposuction Questions Answered

Q.) Is liposuction a good choice for people who want to lose weight?

A.) Liposuction procedures were developed for body contouring rather than a weight loss method. Good candidates for liposuction procedures are those who exercise regularly, but have stubborn areas of fat that will not respond to diet or exercise. The risks associated with this procedure increase as the amount of fluid and fat to be removed increases. Therefore, liposuction procedures are not recommended for people trying to lose weight.

Q.) Are there any side effects associated with liposuction?
A.) The most common side effects are bruising and swelling, but these side effects are limited with proper post-op care. Elastic compression garments should be worn for six weeks after surgery to minimize side effects.

Q.) What is laser liposuction, and how does it work?
A.) Laser liposuction is a fat reduction method that uses a laser to loosen the undesired fat cells in the treatment area for easier removal. It is occasionally used in conjunction with our tumescent liposuction procedures to provide patients with the best results possible.

Q.) Will multiple liposuction procedures be necessary to achieve desired results?
A.) Patients receiving surgical liposuction (including laser liposuction) should see a visible improvement in just one treatment and should not need additional treatments with proper post-op care.

Q.) Are multiple treatments with Zeltiq™ and Zerona® necessary to achieve desired liposuction results?
A.) While improvements are evident after one treatment with non-surgical liposuction, such as Zerona® and Zeltiq™, multiple treatments (6 for Zerona® and 2 for Zeltiq™) will be necessary for optimal results.

Q.) Will the fat removed during a liposuction procedure return?
A.) Fat cells develop during or shortly after puberty, so liposuction (both surgical and non-surgical) produces permanent results. Liposuction patients can potentially increase the size of their remaining fat cells by gaining weight; therefore, healthy diet and exercise should not be neglected even after liposuction.

New Chemotherapy Drug Offers Promising Results for Melanoma Patients

Since its first successful phase of clinical trials a little over a year ago, the chemotherapy drug PLX4032 has continued to show promising results in the treatment of melanoma: the deadliest form of skin cancer.  This is good news not only to melanoma sufferers, but especially heartening to patients whose cancers have spread past the skin-treatment stage.

According to recent reports published in the August 26th addition of The New England Journal of Medicine, treatment with PLX4032 resulted in tumor shrinkage in 81% of the patients within the trial.  These patients were selected for the trial medication because their lab work exhibited the same genetic predisposition for the disease (the BRAF mutation.)

While there are several different types of skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma, melanomas can kill within 3 months as they have the ability to spread quickly and metastasize to internal organ systems.  This reiterates the importance of having any suspicious new spots examined by a dermatologist.  Skin cancers are most accurately diagnosed through skin biopsies in which a board certified dermatologist will excise a small tissue sample and review the questionable cells microscopically.

Dermatology Associates of Atlanta stresses the importance of patients (and their children) to undergo annual “skin cancer body checks” to ensure there are no suspect spots.  In the event other measures need to be taken, DAA’s Surgical Suite is fully equipped to provide MOHS (skin cancer removal) surgerySkin cancer is, to a large degree, preventable by avoiding excess sun exposure and protecting your skin with an SPF 30 sunscreen (or higher.)

To learn more about the treatments offered or to schedule your “skin cancer body check” at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta visit their website or continue to read their blog.

DAA is First Practice in Georgia to Use CoolSculpting by Zeltiq

Dermatology Associates of Atlanta introduces “Cryolipolysis™” procedure to Georgians: ridding patients of fat without surgery.

Using 35 years of experience, serving over 30,000 Atlanta patients with five board certified physicians and three certified providers, Dermatology Associates of Atlanta(DAA) adopts yet another beauty technology: CoolSculpting™ by Zeltiq™.

Atlanta Coolsculpting™ by Zeltiq™, also known as “cryolipo”, is the newest non-invasive fat reduction technology available. Featured on television’s Good Morning America and CBS, Cryolipolysis™ permanently “freezes the fat off” of the abdomen, hips, and back (love handles) of men and women by impairing the fat cells in a targeted area. The impaired area releases the body’s inflammatory response: causing permanent disposal of the fat cells slowly over the months following the procedure.

Impressed by the technology’s preliminary “liposuction-like” results, Dr. Edmond Griffin, founder of Dermatology Associates of Atlanta, even trialed the procedure on himself before becoming the first provider in Georgia to offer the fat reduction technology in early June, 2010.

Dr. Griffin expresses the significance of this new beauty technology, “People see cosmetic procedures like cryolipo on TV and think they’re only available to the ultra wealthy of Los Angeles and New York. We’re making non-surgical fat reduction a beauty reality for Atlantans.”

An ideal procedure for hard-to-trim areas, each CoolSculpting™ treatment takes about an hour, requires no anesthesia or down time, and typically produces a 20% fat reduction in the treated zone. Patients usually report only minor swelling and bruising post-CoolSculpting™; making the procedure instantly popular among athletes and busy professionals who can’t take time off from work or their strict fitness regimes.
