How Do Antibiotics Benefit Patients with Acne and Rosacea?
In an article entitled “Antibiotics: How and Why They Benefit Acne and Rosacea Care,” in the journal Practical Dermatology, dermatologists discuss the importance antibiotics can play in treating these common skin conditions. Over the past decade, the number of dermatologists and non-dermatology doctors prescribing antibiotics to help acne and rosacea sufferers has increased. Not only do antibiotics have an antimicrobial effect, they also serve as anti-inflammatories—especially tetracyclines, a group of broad-spectrum antibiotics used to treat a multitude of conditions.
The article mentioned a study in which acne sufferers’ skin was carefully tracked, which revealed that inflammation of the pores proceeds comedogenesis (the clogging of pores). This means that using antibiotics for their anti-inflammatory purposes could help prevent the occurrence of certain types of acne and/or rosacea in some patients.
Rare side effects are mentioned in the article as well as the chance that regular users could develop antibiotic resistance which would make treatment ineffective. However, the remedy for these situations involves proper diagnosis, choosing a formula to fit each patient, and prescribing medications for the appropriate course depending on the individual patient. Even though these uncommon side effects exist, “antibiotics have proven most useful for the anti-inflammatory effects associated with their use,” according to the article.
Dermatology Associates of Atlanta’s expertly trained dermatologists can help to accurately diagnose your type of acne and prescribe the right course of treatment based on your individual skin type and conditions. For some patients, laser and light treatments are beneficial in treating the symptoms of rosacea and acne. Our V-Beam Perfecta™ laser helps to treat flushing and redness with its micropulse laser technology, while FotoFacial IPL treatments impact the red color of visible veins and the brown pigment in age spots resulting in an all-around clearer complexion. Newer photodynamic therapies like Allumera® help clear acne through the use of a topical cream that is allowed to soak in the skin before being activated with a light source chosen by a dermatologist. IsoLaz™ uses suction to clean pores and then a bacteria-killing light to help eliminate acne at its source.
We understand that your skin is an important part of your everyday life, appearance, and even first impressions. Our diligent and compassionate providers will work with you to create the most effective skincare regimen to help you reach your cosmetic goals.

Dear 16 Year Old Me: Importance of Skin Cancer Risk Factors and Sun Protection
While the cooler months often leave us dreaming of warmer climates, Dermatology Associates of Atlanta believes that any time is the perfect time to spread awareness about the importance of sun protection. We recently came across a video that has gone viral on YouTube entitled “Dear 16-Year-Old Me” in which skin cancer survivors and family members of skin cancer patients describe the dangers associated with not protecting your skin when you go outdoors.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention people with the following risk factors are more likely to develop skin cancer:
- A family history of skin cancer
- Fair skin tone
- History of using tanning beds
- History of unprotected sun exposure/sunburns
- Personal history of skin cancer
- Repeated exposure to the sun through work or play
- Blue or green eyes
- Red or blonde hair
- Skin that burns, freckles, becomes painful, and reddens easily in the sun
- Certain types of moles
Studies have shown that a repeated use of tanning beds is proven to drastically increase your risk of developing skin cancer. While tanning in salons can become addictive, recent tanning bed bans have shown that governments are serious about preventing skin cancer in people of all ages. Many young people think that cancer is something that only affects people over 40. However, there’s a reason skin cancer is often called, “the young person’s cancer.” Because many teenagers and young adults do not protect their skin with long clothing and SPF 30 sunscreen, they are the largest-growing age group for skin cancer diagnoses.
Not only does unprotected sun exposure increase one’s risk for potentially deadly skin cancers, but it also slows down the collagen production that keeps skin looking young. According to a study performed by the EPA, of all the changes in skin and appearance commonly attributed to aging, 90% are caused by the sun. Dermatology Associates of Atlanta offers patients wrinkle reduction treatments to fight the signs of aging. However, we stand by the notion that the best treatment is prevention. In order to maintain a youthful complexion, protect yourself from the sun.
Videos like the one above help to bring attention to the importance of skin cancer prevention in patients of all ages. Dermatology Associates of Atlanta offers skin cancer body checks to help patients catch any signs of melanoma or carcinoma early.

Mark Your Calendar for Our March 2nd Cool Day In
If your New Year’s resolutions need a little boost, don’t miss our Cool Day In. The star of the show is our non-invasive fat-reduction technology: CoolSculpting®! Join us Friday, March 2nd at 12:00pm for a Lunch & Learn event. Attendees can learn more about how CoolSculpting works and take advantage of special pricing on CoolSculpting treatments. We’ll even be giving away a free treatment to one lucky attendee! The event is free to attend, but space is limited. RSVP to Mark by February 27, 2012 at (404) 256-4457 ext. 200.
By applying a low-temperature treatment applicator to the area(s) of unwanted fat, CoolSculpting freezes the fat cells beyond their viability. After treatment, the fat is slowly eliminated from the cells, giving patients a 20-40% reduction in the treatment area over the next four to six months. The non-invasive nature of CoolSculpting means patients can reduce areas of fat without incisions, sutures, or recovery time.

New Studies Shed Light on the Treatment of Tough Acne and Scars
Acne is one of the most common skin conditions and is often caused by dead skin cells, excessive oil production, and/or bacteria growth on the skin. Regardless of age, patients who suffer from acne will most often try anything to rid themselves of this embarrassing skin condition. Featured in a recent edition of Practical Dermatology, five new studies regarding the treatment of acne and acne scarring may be the answer for individuals whose acne may not respond to other treatments.
The first study mentioned addresses the different cultural and ethnic factors that affect the treatment of acne. For example, individuals with darker skin tones are more prone to hyperpigmentation from harsher acne treatment therapies. Along the same lines, certain cultural attitudes toward acne treatments and folk remedies passed down through families may contribute to the failure of certain dermatological treatments.
The second study looks into the use of CO2 Fractionated Lasers to safely address acne scarring in individuals with darker skin tones. The results of the research show that around 35% of patients who received non-ablative factional treatment and 37% of patients receiving ablative fractional treatments experienced a 50% improvement in the appearance of their skin including a reduction in the appearance of acne scars. Meanwhile, no adverse effects were experienced in the skin tone or texture of patients.
In another study, researchers found that a mixture containing 10% glycolic acid could be an effective treatment for mild acne. Glycolic acid is a chemical often used in chemical peels that works to slough the outer layers of skin and open the pores in the second layer of skin which loosens blackheads and debris clogging pores. The research on this chemical mixture shows that patients responded after 90 days of treatment, and some even noticed a benefit after 45 days.
The fourth study looks into the effects of radiofrequency to reduce the appearance of acne scars and skin texture irregularities post-acne. During the trial, patients received five RF treatments 30 days apart. Researchers observed a 72% improvement in the appearance of acne scars based on the acne scar scale. Patient skin texture and pigmentation improved over 60% each as well.
Finally, in a study conducted in Japan, researchers found that patients are more likely to adhere to an acne treatment plan as prescribed by a dermatologist when patients felt like they had a good understanding of acne as a skin condition and how to treat it. Factors like side effects and personal satisfaction with the treatment also had an impact on whether patients continued with treatment. These findings illustrate that improving patient education regarding acne and treatment may increase patient adherence to acne treatments.

Join Dermatology Associates of Atlanta for Discounts on Allumera® Photodynamic Skin Treatment
You’re Invited Wednesday, February 1st from 7am-5pm!
Dermatology Associates of Atlanta is excited to announce our latest complexion-clearing technology: Allumera® Photodynamic Skin Treatment. Useful for individuals with varying skin conditions, Allumera® can help reduce the signs of acne and skin’s oiliness, as well as eliminate signs of aging like sunspots and enlarged pores.
Allumera is a topical cream that works by concentrating in damaged skin cells. After the treatment has soaked into the skin for about an hour, our dermatologists wash it off and choose a light source (typically Isolaz® or Red Light treatment) to help the chemicals in the cells repair the skin.
In a five-month controlled study, people experienced a 44% reduction in the appearance of their pores three months after their last treatment. In a survey conducted three months after their last Allumera® treatment:
- 93% of people said their skin felt softer.
- 91% of people said their skin felt more hydrated, moisturized and smoother.
- 89% of people said their skin texture was improved.
- 86% of people said their skin looked and felt healthier.
- The majority of people said they would recommend Allumera to a friend.
If you’d like to take advantage of this great new technology, join us this Wednesday, February 1st from 7am-5pm for discounts on Allumera® and Isolaz™ or Red Light treatments. Call (404) 256-4457 today to schedule your appointment.
