DOT Laser Can Pin-Point Skin Problems
The professional laser technicians at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta’s Laser Institute of Georgia will regularly use a combination of their over 15 different lasers to best remedy patients’ skin issues. The laser technology world is also learning the advantages of combination treatments evidenced by the invention and increased popularity of the DOT (Dermal Optical Thermolysis) laser.
The advancements in laser skin therapy have come a long way in the past couple of years. Invented more recently, the Fractionated (Fraxel) CO2 lasers have the marked advantage of being able to increase collagen and elastin production to treat wrinkles, hyper pigmentation (skin darkening), and facial scarring in specific areas of the face, neck, and hands through tiny columns penetrating the dermis.
Originally introduced in the 1960’s, CO2 Laser Resurfacing was a great invention for eliminating deep wrinkles on those patients with fair complexions. The down-side to the original CO2 Laser was that it had to be used over the entire face to prevent an uneven appearance, and the strength of the treatment required significant recovery time (typically a whole month.)
The DOT laser combines the main advantages of both the original CO2 and Fraxel CO2 by penetrating the lower collagen-containing layers of the dermis through tiny microscopic points. This combination results in magnified results (smoother, tighter, younger looking skin) with significantly decreased pain and recovery time.

Never pick a tattoo off the wall. Whatever tattoo you get will be with you for a looong time – most likely forever. So it is of the utmost importance that you get a tattoo that truly means something to you. This doesn’t mean that every tattoo you get must commemorate a deceased relative. Your tattoo can still be funny, girly, or ironic – as long as it has special meaning to you. If you spontaneously walk into a tattoo parlor, pick a design off the wall and get it done right then and there, chances are you will be sick of it about as quick as you made the decision to get one!
Be careful about placement. When you think about where your tattoo is going to be placed, you have to think about what your opinion will be on the placement 10, 20, 30, even 50 years from now! Try to avoid places that will start to sag or expand with age and make sure the tattoo can be easily covered with clothing if necessary.
Shop around for an experienced artist. Tattoo artists have portfolios that they are willing to show you in order to showcase their work; so take advantage of this and shop around! This is especially important if you are having a tattoo created especially for you. First make sure that your artist is good; then make sure your artist’s design aesthetic matches yours. Also of utmost importance, is making sure your tattoo artist/parlor is upholding the highest health standards for your personal safety. Being selective in the artist you pick will benefit you in the long run!
Cost should not be THE deciding factor. When you are getting something that will potentially be on your body for the rest of your life, do not be cheap! Make sure you are going to a high quality parlor with an experienced artist, even if that means paying more.
Do not neglect the aftercare of the tattoo. Once you put the time into planning for a tattoo and spending the money to do it, you need to make sure that you are also diligent about tattoo aftercare. To avoid infection, you must avoid harsh conditions, keep the area clean and moisturized, and allow it to heal.

Dermatology Associates of Atlanta World News Highlight: Chinese Study Finds Evidence of Leprosy Genes
One of the most ancient, and literarily relevant, skin diseases is leprosy. It has been around for over 4,000 years, was well known in ancient China and was even mentioned in the Bible. Now that treatments are available for leprosy patients, the disease does not carry the same stigma as it once did. However, new evidence has been uncovered that suggests that scientists have been wrong about the causes of leprosy.
The long term study done in China, and recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found seven gene mutations which appear to increase a person’s susceptibility to the disease. This evidence refutes the previous claim that scientists have made about leprosy not being an inherited or congenital disease.
While leprosy can indeed by “contagious”, this study shows that this is not the only way for a person to contract the disease. This new evidence suggests that leprosy is influenced by a person’s genes and that if a parent contracts leprosy, more than likely, their offspring will too.
The study looked at the genes of 706 leprosy patients and 1,225 non leprosy patients, finding the seven mutated genes in all of the leprosy patients. The genes found are classified as “susceptibility” genes, meaning that a person with these genes will not necessarily contract leprosy, but will be more susceptible to it if exposed.
This is an important discovery, because although leprosy isn’t a problem in countries like the US or China, it is still prevalent in developing nations. In the future, people with leprosy susceptibility can be identified before they contract the disease and permanent damage is made.
Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, affects the skin, eyes, mucous membranes, and nerves. Unfortunately, any nerve damage to leprosy patients is permanent even if they are recovered from the disease.

Psoriasis is a more common condition than one might think – affecting about 7.5 million Americans (according to The National Psoriasis Foundation). The most common form of psoriasis, affecting about 80 percent of patients, is called plaque psoriasis and is characterized by patches of red, inflamed, and slightly raised skin. The affected skin is oftentimes covered with silvery scales and is found most typically around the elbows, knees, and lower back. Other types of psoriasis include Guttate (small red spots on the skin, mostly on the limbs), Inverse (smooth, red patches of skin normally found in skin folds like armpits, around the groin, and under the breasts), pustular (white blisters filled with pus and surrounded by red skin that eventually scales over), and erythrodermic (larger areas of skin covering much of the body that experiences episodes of severe pain, itching, and skin shedding).
Because psoriasis is a chronic condition, patients will never be completely rid of it.
