Dermatology Associates of Atlanta’s board certified dermatologists Dr. Edmond Griffin and Dr. Scott Karempelis have been performing liposuction since 1990. In the 22 years they’ve performed the procedure, they’ve also integrated non-surgical fat reduction methods to remove unwanted, localized fat deposits from Atlanta cosmetic surgery patients’ profiles. Performed within DAA’s in-house AAAHC approved Surgical Suite, liposuction utilizes mechanical, vacuum–like suctioning power coupled with various laser, electronic, and ultrasound assistance methods to remove excess, exercise-resistant fat from the face, neck, chest, arms, abdomen (stomach), love handles, saddle bags, buttocks, and knees of men and women.
Although many claim that SlimLipo™ is less invasive than tumescent liposuction, the true difference between the procedures lies in results. Unlike traditional liposuction techniques, SlimLipo™ uses a specific laser wavelength to melt unwanted fat so it can be more easily removed. The “Slim” in SlimLipo™ comes from “Selective Laser-Induced Melting” which helps to remove unwanted fat while reducing skin sagging and creating smooth contours.
The laser energy targets unwanted fat and heats it to its melting point. In the process, the heating tightens the surrounding skin and tissue to help firm the area(s) in which SlimLipo™ was performed for a smoother overall appearance—this is a big benefit of SlimLipo™.
Another advantage to SlimLipo™ is that the use of the laser means less manual force is required to remove fat; therefore, post-procedure bruising and swelling are decreased. Used to break up localized pockets of fat, laser-assisted liposuction also allows Dermatology Associates of Atlanta’s trained and board certified providers to combine the technology with tumescent liposuction methods and give patients the best liposuction results possible.
SlimLipo™ is ideal for a majority of fat reduction patients. Candidates for this procedure are in generally good health and want to eliminate localized pockets of fat. Liposuction (traditional or SlimLipo™) is not a weight-loss treatment and is not recommended for patients who are overweight. SlimLipo™ can treat a number of areas in the body including the abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, thighs, back, arms, neck, knees, chin, and even the breasts in men seeking breast reduction.
Recovery time for SlimLipo™ patients can range between a few days to a few weeks depending on their age, overall health, and the number and size of areas they have treated. Any surgical procedure carries a degree of risk. However, side effects and risks are rare when proper pre- and post-surgical recommendations are followed. Nonetheless, risks can include infection, swelling, bruising and minor discomfort. It’s important to consult with a doctor who is experienced in SlimLipo™ like Drs. Griffin and Karempelis who have been performing liposuction for over two decades.

FDA approved for laser lipolysis, SlimLipo™ uses laser technology to melt fat for easier removal while simultaneously tightening surrounding tissue. Dermatology Associates of Atlanta’s providers combine this treatment with tumescent liposuction to help smooth and contour treatment area(s) resulting in an aesthetically pleasing liposuction result.
Candidates for SlimLipo™ include men and women in generally good health who would like to remove unwanted, localized pockets of fat from specific areas of the body.
SlimLipo™ can be performed anywhere typical liposuction procedures are performed including the legs, arms, hip, abdomen, waist, in the chest for men with gynecomastia, and more. The precision of SlimLipo™ allows Dr. Edmond Griffin and Dr. Scott Karempelis to work in areas that may need more meticulous treatment like around the neck.
Most SlimLipo™ patients can return to work within 2 to 3 days after the procedure. Because it’s still a surgical procedure patients generally resume more physical activities after two to three weeks of healing.
SlimLipo™ is a body sculpting laser that selectively targets fat and dermal tissue with dual wavelengths. One wavelength melts the fat, which allows it to be removed through micro cannulas. The other wavelength targets and stimulates collagen, resulting in firmer skin and a more contoured appearance.
The idea behind the SmartLipo and SlimLipo™ technology is similar—using laser-assisted liposuction for a less invasive liposuction procedure. The major difference is the SlimLipo™’s dual wavelengths that target fat to reduce the number of fat cells while tightening collagen, but it is also more efficient than SmartLipo as SlimLipo™ delivers energy to a wider area.
Dermatology Associates of Atlanta’s providers have been performing liposuction since 1990, and use SlimLipo™ in conjunction with tumescent liposuction in order to provide their patients with the best body contouring results. The two procedures together to help ensure that unwanted fat is removed while surrounding tissue is tightened and skin sagging is prevented.
During liposuction surgery, a board certified physician will create tiny incisions (1/4 of an inch to 1/8 of an inch) within the treatment area(s) and insert thin metal tubes known as cannulas to inject a local anesthetic and loosening agents to facilitate removal of the targeted fat. Known as “wet liposuction,” or “tumescent liposuction,” the fluid solution uses epinephrine to constrict blood vessels and minimize bleeding during and after liposuction surgery. The fluid combination also includes a carefully calculated ratio of lidocaine (based on patient weight) to numb the surgical area and minimize pain during and after the cosmetic skin procedure.

Liposuction removes excess fat by suctioning it out of the body through tiny cannulas. During a tumescent liposuction procedure, which is often referred to as “wet liposuction,” a diluted solution of local anesthesia (lidocaine) and epinephrine is injected into the skin to puff up the fat cells to allow an easier removal. The injected fluid not only makes fat removal more manageable, but the local anesthetic helps manage patient discomfort during and after the cosmetic procedure.
Laser liposuction is a fat removal method that can be used with local anesthesia to remove fat from the hips, thighs, abdomen, back, neck, and jowls of Atlanta liposuction surgery patients. Typically, laser liposuction procedures like SmartLipo™ are done on an outpatient basis in combination with tumescent liposuction, require only one treatment, and produce noticeable improvement within three months.
In addition to being an outpatient procedure, our laser liposuction surgery has the added benefit of using extremely thin suctioning tools, micro cannulas, to remove even minute areas of fat. Our advanced technology makes laser liposuction an excellent liposuction revision option for those patients who have previously had forms of liposuction that did not produce the refinement they desired.
All surgical forms of liposuction remove unwanted fat cells from localized regions of the body. With a fat transfer procedure, the Cosmetic Center’s skilled dermatological surgeons remove fat from your body with liposuction, purify the fat, and skillfully re-inject the fat into areas where more youthful volume is desired. Fat transfer procedures produce results similar to that of facial fillers. At Dermatology Associates of Atlanta, liposuction patients most frequently request fat transfer to rejuvenate the deep wrinkles around the nose (nasolabial folds) and thinned areas along the cheeks and chin. Additionally, fat transfer can also be used to rejuvenate the appearance of the hands and severe acne scars.
Dermatology Associates of Atlanta is proud to offer the latest technologies to meet Atlantans’ skin care needs. Our Cosmetic Center offers CoolSculpting to provide non-surgical, topically applied fat reduction. By applying cold to small, targeted areas of unwanted fat, the fat cells are damaged and then expelled through the lymphatic system, resulting in fat reduction. CoolSculpting is suitable for patients who have very small amounts of excess fat.
Because the treatments are applied externally, patients who elect to have non-surgical fat reduction methods such as CoolSculpting will require no recovery time, pain, or need for surgical drains. In fact, some CoolSculpting; patients have even reported exercising the same day as their treatment.
For those patients who may desire more comprehensive fat reduction, or have multiple areas of concern, tumescent liposuction or SlimLipo™ may be a more appropriate procedure. After traditional liposuction (tumescent), DAA’s physicians strongly recommend limiting vigorous activity 10-14 days following the procedure and wearing an elastic compression garment for six weeks to minimize post surgery swelling, bruising, and prevent excess fluid loss or bleeding will be prescribed.
While vigorous activity should be limited for a few days after SlimLipo™ body contouring, patients are typically able to return to work and normal daily routines just a few days after their procedure. Although compression garments are still prescribed, SlimLipo™ patients only have to wear them for two to three weeks rather than six.
In order to help minimize swelling and help our liposuction patients achieve the best possible results, we recommend and offer post-operative massage and ultrasound treatments that are performed by our on-site technician. We recommend that you receive treatment twice a week for two weeks following surgery (includes first post-operative visit). These treatments are not mandatory, and your surgical results will not be compromised if you are unable to take advantage of the offer. However, massage and ultrasound treatments minimize swelling, allowing final results to be seen sooner.
How many liposuction treatments are required to notice less fat?
Surgical liposuction produces noticeable cosmetic improvement with one treatment. If proper aftercare is taken and body weight is maintained, patients should not need any additional treatments.
Can the fat that’s removed with surgical or non-surgical liposuction come back?
Fat removal through liposuction (both surgical and non-surgical) is permanent because a person develops all of the fat cells they will have during or shortly after puberty. It is possible however, to increase the size of the remaining fat cells through weight gain—emphasizing the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle even after body contouring procedures.
Is liposuction a good option for me if I want to lose weight?
Liposuction procedures are not a weight control method. While they are an effective way to improve body contours and lose inches, the amount of fluid and fat removed during liposuction must be carefully controlled as not to compromise patients’ safety.
Are there any side effects associated with liposuction?
The side effects associated with liposuction are similar to the inherent risks of any surgery. Many Atlanta liposuction patients experience bruising after their procedure due to the motions associated with fat removal; however, most bruising subsides within a few weeks following surgery.
Is ultrasonic liposuction better than traditional (tumescent) liposuction I’ve heard about?
Ultrasonic liposuction and tumescent liposuction are helpful in different situations. At Dermatology Associates of Atlanta, we use the techniques in combination—ultrasonic liposuction to “liquefy” the targeted fat, and tumescent liposuction to actually remove it.
Isn’t liposuction something a plastic surgeon performs?
Cosmetic surgery procedures such as liposuction and blepharoplasty are typically offered by plastic surgeons; however, the board certified physicians at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta possess the experience and expertise with skin to precisely gauge and perform the procedures required to render maximum cosmetic improvement. Dr. Griffin and Dr. Karempelis have performed liposuction in our accredited Surgical Suite since the early 1990s.
How much does liposuction cost?
The price of surgical fat reduction with liposuction depends upon the amount of fat to be removed, the length of time required to remove the fat, and the type of fat to be removed (firmer fibrous fat versus softer, malleable fat). Proper cosmetic surgery estimates can only be compiled after a thorough consultation with the Atlanta Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Center.
