Skin Care Tips for the Fall Transitional Weather

Skin Care Tips for the Fall Transitional WeatherThere are plenty of autumn hallmarks—football, holidays on the horizon, and of course, pumpkin spice everything. Our changing social calendars can be so consuming that we forget about the part of the season mother nature is responsible for: the actual weather changing. Along with the new nip in the air comes a shift in the way your skin responds to the air, so here are a few tips from our providers at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta to help your skin manage the transition.

  1. Moisturize…the right way.

Summer air has plenty of humidity, but with the fall comes drier air, which in turn can dry out your skin, so moisturizing will be key for the next several months. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your hydration:

  • Choose the right moisturizer based on your skin type and the other concerns you have (e.g., aging, acne, etc.).
  • Hydrate from the outside as well as the inside by drinking plenty of water.
  • Consider switching to a heavier moisturizer than the one you used during the summer.
  • Avoid long, hot showers, as this can lead to dry skin.
  • Apply moisturizer immediately after showering or washing your hands to lock in the moisture.
  • Wear gloves when you use cleaning products or wash dishes.

  1. Exfoliate regularly.

Getting rid of dry, flaky skin can restore that bright glow you enjoyed during the warmer months, so try an exfoliation product. Most people should exfoliate between one and three times per week, though it varies based on your individual needs, so ask one of our board-certified dermatologists and physician assistants or licensed estheticians for their recommendation.

  1. Be cautious about the material in your scarves.

Your skin may react differently to various types of fabric, so keep an eye on whether your neck or chest become irritated after you wear certain scarves and avoid that type of fabric in the future.

  1. Don’t lock away your sunscreen.

The need for sun protection may be more obvious during the summer when we can feel the sun’s heat every day, but the ultraviolet rays can do just as much damage (medically and aesthetically) during the fall, so continue to include sunscreen as part of your daily routine.

  1. Have lip balm accessible.

As with the rest of your skin, lips can be dried out by the cooling air, so always have lip balm ready for use. Just like moisturizer, lip balm is most successful when it can lock in existing moisture, so apply it as soon as you get out of the shower and remember to re-apply as needed.

  1. Consider a moisturizing cleanser.

With the summer humidity, many people with oily or acne-prone skin tend to opt for stronger cleansers during the warmer months. But as fall moves in, these cleansers often prove to be overly harsh, depleting your skin of the minimal moisture it already has. Try switching to a gentler moisturizing cleanser for the next few months instead.

  1. Take advantage of the perfect season for laser treatments.

Before and after any laser treatment (whether it’s laser hair removal, fractionated laser skin resurfacing, or one of the many other options we offer) it’s important to avoid sun exposure because it increases the risk of side effects. To make this precaution easier and more convenient, most patients prefer to have their cosmetic laser treatments performed during the fall and/or winter.

These tips can help you get started with updating your skin care routine, but remember, every person’s skin is unique and it responds to the weather in its own way, so it’s important to seek the guidance of a specialized professional like our medical staff. If you want to discuss your unique dermatology needs, schedule a consultation with us. Beyond Skin: Treatments for the Hair and Nails

Did you know that our providers, as board-certified dermatologists and physician assistants who specialize in dermatology, are experts in not only your skin but your hair and nails as well? Your manicurist and hair stylist may be able to help you with the cosmetic side of your hair and nails, but when it comes to keeping them healthy (which lays the foundation for those great haircuts and manicures), Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA) can address a wide variety of concerns.

Beyond Skin Treatments for the Hair and NailsHair Loss & Hair Thinning

There are many factors which can cause hair loss for both men and women, and our experts at DAA can determine the underlying cause and offer a variety of treatment options catered to your needs. In fact, two of our nine unique specialty centers are dedicated to this common concern: The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research and The Griffin Center for Women’s Hair Loss. Depending on your specific condition, we offer customized treatment plans including hair restoration surgery, red light therapy, topical and oral medications, micro needling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and more. As experts in their field, The Griffin Center has also been nominated as Atlanta’s Best Hair Restoration facility in Best Self’s Best of Atlanta contest (go to Best Self’s site before September 30th to cast your vote!).

Nail Fungus

As the most common nail disorder in the US, nail fungus occurs when a fungal infection occurs on under, or within a nail. While it can appear on fingernails or toenails, it’s much more common on the toenails. This is because the feet tend to stay more warm and moist, creating an ideal growing condition for the fungi. While it’s primarily a concern for cosmetic reasons, nail fungus can be treated with laser treatments, oral medications, or topical medications.

Psoriasis of the Nails and Scalp

As a chronic immune condition, psoriasis causes skin cells to multiply at a much higher rate than normal, which leads to patches of skin which are itchy, inflamed, dry, and scaly (called “plaques”) because they’re constantly shedding old skin cells to make way for the over-produced new cells. Each patient is affected in different areas of their body, and for some, this includes the nails and/or the scalp. At our dedicated Psoriasis Treatment Center, we can tailor a treatment plan to each patient, potentially consisting of topical treatments, specialized shampoos, phototherapy (using precise UVA or UVB light to slow the cell growth), and systemic medicines (such as pills or injections).

Dandruff (and conditions which look like dandruff)

Dandruff appears when the scalp sheds small flakes of skin cells. While straightforward dandruff can typically be treated by simply using a specialty and/or prescription shampoo, many patients think they have dandruff when in fact they have one of several other conditions which cause this similar flaking. These include certain types of dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, and fungal infections of the scalp. Our providers at DAA can determine the true cause of your flaking and recommend treatments best suited for your needs.

As our patients already know, regardless of how much makeup you wear, having healthy, beautiful skin really makes a difference in your overall look, and the same is true for your hair and nails. If you want to discuss what we can do to enhance the health and appearance of your skin, hair, and nails, schedule a consultation at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta. Plus, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ for more aesthetic tips, and don’t forget to vote for us as Atlanta’s Best Dermatologist in Best Self’s 2016 Best of Atlanta competition!

Specialty Center of the Month: Our Psoriasis Center

At Dermatology Associates of Atlanta, we’re dedicated to providing the highest quality of skin care—head to toe. In an effort to offer our patients both the convenience and comfort of a large, multi-functional practice as well as the medical benefits of specialized physicians, we’re structured as one practice with nine unique specialty centers. To help our patients learn more about all we have to offer, we’re highlighting one of our specialty centers each month in our blog, and this September, the spotlight is on our Psoriasis Center.

Ask DAA I Take Good Care of My Face, but Now I’m Noticing Skin Problems Elsewhere…What’s UpPsoriasis is a chronic condition which, in its most common form, causes patches of skin to be dry, itchy, and inflamed, with white scales on top. Though the symptoms are most visible on the skin, psoriasis is actually an immune condition which causes skin cells to reproduce at up to ten times the normal rate. Because new skin cells are being generated so quickly, the body is shedding the old skin at a rapid pace, leading to these symptomatic patches, called “plaques.” While the exact cause of psoriasis has not been found, it appears to be a genetically-linked, but it may actually develop due to unique triggers like stress or illness, which vary from patient to patient.

What is the Dermatology Associates of Atlanta Psoriasis Center?

While there is no known cure for psoriasis, the symptoms can be effectively managed using a variety of treatment options—and that’s where our Psoriasis Center comes in. Our board-certified dermatologists, physician assistants, and medical technicians have a wealth of experience in treating psoriasis, and have long been on the cutting edge of the latest medical advancements. We can evaluate each patient’s condition and develop a treatment plan based on which of the five subtypes of psoriasis they have (plaque psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, and erythrodermic psoriasis), as well as the severity and persistence of their symptoms.

What services are offered at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta’s Psoriasis Center?

Each psoriasis patient is unique, so our providers offer every treatment option available in order to design the ideal solution. For those with milder psoriasis, prescription topical medications may offer relief from their symptoms. For others, oral or injectable medications may be a more effective solution. The “biologic” revolution of the 21st century has led to ability to deliver clear or almost clear results to nearly everyone. Phototherapy, in the form of a light box or with a unique laser known as the PHAROS EX-308 Excimer Laser, can also be highly effective. The Excimer laser has the added benefit of only treating the psoriasis-affected areas. Using ultraviolet (UVA or UVB) light in a highly controlled and precise way to slow the development of new skin cells, we can specifically target the psoriasis plaques without damaging healthy skin. These phototherapy treatments are brief and painless, and they allow most patients to experience several months of remission after a series of sessions. This highly advanced method can even treat particularly difficult areas, like the hands, feet, knees, elbows, and even the scalp.

Psoriasis can be a particularly stressful condition because the symptoms are so outwardly visible. But thanks to modern medicine as well as the providers at DAA who have dedicated themselves to the field, long-term symptom management is possible and can allow you to live your life without the daily self-consciousness of untreated psoriasis. To discuss your condition and how we can help, schedule an appointment at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta. Or, for more information about psoriasis as well as other areas of general and cosmetic dermatology, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. Plus, don’t forget to vote for us in Best Self’s Best of Atlanta contest for Best Dermatologist!

Your Rosacea Questions Answered

We all blush every once in a while when we’re embarrassed or we’ve just finished a workout, but for those with rosacea, facial redness is much more than a temporary problem. This common condition causes the facial blood vessels to dilate, leading to persistent, frequent, and sometimes severe facial redness. Depending on the specific type of rosacea a patient has, they may also experience facial spider veins, acne-like pimples, and thickening skin on their nose. At Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA), our board-certified dermatologists are here to answer all your rosacea questions.

Atlanta Rosacea TreatmentsWhat causes rosacea?

The direct cause of rosacea isn’t known, but there is a bit we do know. It is not contagious, and while a specific gene hasn’t been identified, the condition tends to run in families. It is also believed that the immune system, Demodex mites, a bug called H. pylori, and/or specific proteins may be involved.

Why do rosacea symptoms seem to come and go?

Rosacea symptoms are more severe at certain times than others because they are affected by certain “triggers.” Each patient has their own specific triggers, but some of the most common include: sun exposure, cold temperatures (especially cold winds), hot beverages, certain foods (particularly spicy), stress, and heavy exercise.

How can rosacea be treated?

Rosacea is a chronic condition, which means that unfortunately, there is no cure. However, there are a variety of ways to manage and minimize the symptoms. Topical and oral medications can reduce inflammation. For most patients, the most effective way to achieve long-term results is with laser treatments which target the dilated blood vessels and facial spider veins, causing the body to absorb and eliminate them so that symptoms are kept to a minimum.

Will my rosacea get worse as I age?

Each patient’s condition takes its own unique course, but many patients do find that their rosacea symptoms become more severe without treatment. Getting started with medications or laser procedures in rosacea’s early stages may be able to help patients keep their symptoms to a minimum for years to come.

Is there any relation between rosacea and redness in the eyes?

Yes, it is possible. Rosacea may affect the eyes—a condition known as ocular rosacea. This can make the eyes bloodshot, watery, and uncomfortable.

Are there any special skin care instructions rosacea patients should follow?

Proper skin care should be an important part of your rosacea management. Be sure to stick to mild and non-abrasive cleansers, and to use either their fingertips or a soft wash cloth (not a rough cloth, loofah, or brush). After washing your skin, be sure to pat it dry with a soft towel (do not wipe it dry) and let it finish air-drying before applying any topical medication. Because rosacea patients tend to have sensitive skin, look for non-irritating and fragrance-free products. Finally, remember to wear sunscreen every day and reapply as needed.

While it’s most common in people between the ages of 30 and 50, primarily women who are of Celtic or Scandinavian descent, rosacea can happen to anyone. Early diagnosis can allow you to get a jump on long-term management, so if you suspect that you may have rosacea, schedule an appointment at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta. Fast Facts about Laser Tattoo Removal

Interestingly, much of cosmetic dermatology involves not adding something to the skin but removing something the patient is unhappy with. Tattoos, however, are a unique situation. They’re a decision that’s intended to be permanent, but much can change over the course of a decade or two to make you stop enjoying your body art. Some patients simply want to have their tattoo modified or replaced with an updated design. In any case, laser tattoo removal is a medically proven way to fade away your ink safely and effectively. If you’re considering this popular laser treatment, here are some fun and helpful facts you may enjoy from our laser tattoo removal experts at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA).

08.16.16 Fast Facts about Tattoo Removal

If you’re planning laser tattoo removal, remember that it is a true medical procedure, so safety should be the most important factor in deciding on a facility and a provider. Be sure to look for a qualified medical professional like a board-certified dermatologist or physician assistant with extensive experience in laser tattoo removal. At DAA, not only are our providers highly experienced in the procedure, but we also use the latest and most advanced tattoo removal lasers, PicoWay and PicoSure, to make each treatment as safe and effective as possible. Specialty Center of the Month: Dermatology Associates of Atlanta’s Hair Removal Center

When it comes to cosmetic dermatology, customization is king, because every patient has their own unique aesthetic concerns and ideas about how they want to look. However, unwanted hair is nearly a universal problem. All of us have spent time shaving, waxing, tweezing, sugaring, or using other methods to get rid of hair on one body area or another – the face, underarms, chest, back, knees, legs, bikini area, or even down to the ankles and toes. To meet the demand for longer-lasting hair removal solutions and to offer our patients only the best, Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA) houses our own specialized Hair Removal Center.

What is the Dermatology Associates of Atlanta Hair Removal Center?

laser hair removal discounts atlantaThe field of dermatology spans a wide number of different procedures and skin conditions, so to offer our patients the most specialized care available, DAA houses nine unique specialty centers, each staffed with providers who focus on distinct aspects of dermatology. At our Hair Removal Center, our providers have over 20 years of laser experience and they specialize in the various methods of long-term hair removal. Laser hair removal is highly popular, and as one of the few offices who participated in the trial testing for the very first laser hair removal treatment, our experience in this procedure is nearly unparalleled, but our patients have also achieved great results with our two other options: EpiLight and electrolysis.

What services are offered at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta’s Hair Removal Center?

We offer three primary types of hair removal treatments:

  • Laser hair removal uses a beam of light which is attracted to the pigment in your hair. This allows the energy to travel down the hair and into the follicle, damaging the follicle to impair future growth. We have several different types of lasers we can use, depending on your skin type.
  • EpiLight is very similar to laser hair removal. However, this particular device uses IPL, or intense pulsed light – the same type of light used for photo rejuvenation.
  • Electrolysis uses an ultrafine probe to send electrical currents into the individual hair follicles, hindering future hair growth. Unlike laser hair removal, electrolysis doesn’t rely on the hair’s pigment because it delivers the energy directly into the follicles, so it’s an ideal option for patients who have very little pigment in their hair (e.g., those with blond, gray, or white hair). It’s also particularly common for fine hairs on the face.

Long-term hair removal can be the perfect way to take some stress and wasted time out of your life by letting you wake up every day to smooth, hair-free skin, but it shouldn’t be attempted by someone who isn’t an experienced medical professional. That’s why our Certified Clinical Electrologist, who has been treating hair removal patients for over twenty years, has the expertise to evaluate your hair and skin and recommend the ideal treatment for you using our state-of-the-art technology. To find out your hair removal options, schedule a consultation at Dermatology Associates of Atlanta’s Hair Removal Center. Or, to learn more about our practice, stay up-to-date on our latest specials and events, and get some great skin care tips, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.

Fat Where You Want It, Less Where You Don’t

If you’ve ever stood in a mirror and said, “if only I could take volume from this area of my body and move it here…” you’re not alone. Unfortunately, we have little natural control over the proportions of our face and body, and many people watch distraughtly over the years as they gain fat in unwanted areas (like the abdomen and thighs) while losing it in other areas (like the face). A healthy diet and exercise may be able to keep up with your changing metabolism, but the loss of facial volume is a natural part of aging. While no health regimen can make you gain fat in your face while keeping it off elsewhere, as one of the earliest providers of fat transfer in Atlanta, Dermatology Associates of Atlanta (DAA) has the expertise to help you.

Fat Where You Want It, Less Where You Don’tAs its name suggests, fat transfer (or fat grafting) essentially involves taking fat from one area of your body and transferring it to another. In a minimally invasive procedure, our board-certified dermatologists can remove excess fat from the donor site you choose (like your lower abdomen). This fat is then purified into a form which allows it to be carefully injected into the desired area. While there are artificial fillers designed to add volume to the cheeks, fat transfer provides some unique benefits:

  • Fat transfer results can be longer-lasting. Depending on their unique formulas, facial fillers can last anywhere from six months to two years, because your body will eventually metabolize the substance. Fat transfer is much less temporary, although “touch-ups” may be needed if some of the injected fat does not develop its new blood supply.
  • Fat transfer produces a particularly natural look and feel. Facial fillers have a small risk of developing a less natural texture, and while this is uncommon, fat transfer fully eliminates this risk.
  • Fat transfer allows you to reduce unwanted fat. It’s important to keep in mind that fat transfer only requires a small amount of fat, so the fat reduction in your donor site will be subtle. If you’re looking for a more dramatic change in your body contours, however, you may be a candidate for combining your fat transfer with liposuction.

Fat Transfer for Facial Rejuvenation

As we discussed earlier, one of the most popular ways to use fat transfer is to restore facial volume which has been lost due to the natural aging process. After your fat is extracted and prepared, it is injected into several tiny lines, essentially forming a “grid” of grafted fat. This is commonly done in the cheek area (where you develop “hollows” as you age) to restore a more youthful volume and plumpness, but it is also frequently used for lip augmentation as well.

Fat Transfer for Acne Scar Reduction

Another way we often use fat grafting at DAA is to resolve pitted acne scars. Caused by severe inflammation from acne, these scars look like depressions in the skin because rigid scar tissue is pulling down on the surface skin. In many cases, the most effective way to address these deep scars is by surgically releasing the rigid bands of scar tissue and injecting your own natural fat into the areas to “fill in” the absent volume.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

To make our fat transfer results as effective as possible, our physicians at DAA often inject PRP along with the fat during these procedures. PRP is a part of your own natural blood which is rich in growth factors, and these growth factors enhance the healing process. This is used alongside fat transfer to add fullness and youthful firmness to your skin, and PRP can also have this effect when combined with certain other facial rejuvenation procedures we offer, like Infini™ skin tightening, Réjuvapen® micro needling, and dermal fillers (called a Vampire Facelift®).

If you’re considering fat transfer (or any other cosmetic treatment, for that matter), it’s important to be sure the procedure truly balances all your needs and that you have realistic expectations for your results. The best way to find out is through a consultation with a board-certified dermatologist who can evaluate your aesthetic goals and recommend the ideal options for you. To get started, schedule an appointment with Dermatology Associates of Atlanta. Or, to hear more about all the latest dermatology news and our special offers, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.

atlanta microneedling discountsMicro Needling with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

Your own natural blood contains growth factors which can rejuvenate your skin, and we offer several ways to harness this power. Micro needling procedures stimulate your body’s healing process while also creating pathways which allow your growth factors to reach varying layers of your skin. This adds up to an increase in collagen, which can reduce the appearance of scars while leaving your skin younger, firmer, and more radiant. Our providers at DAA offer PRP with two different micro needling procedures: Réjuvapen® (a rather straightforward micro needling) and Infini™ Skin Tightening (which combines micro needling with radio frequency (RF) energy for enhanced results).
