Hair loss affects millions of people across the globe and has equally numerous causes. Dermatology Associates of Atlanta’s skilled providers can help determine the cause of hair loss and develop an advantageous treatment plan. Our hair loss specialty centers, The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research as well as The Griffin Center for Women’s Hair Loss, are at the forefront of hair loss research and restoration for men, women, and even children. Dr. Edmond Griffin and Dr. Ashley Curtis take the time to individually graft each strand of hair (follicular grafting) as well as explore non-surgical alternatives to ensure that each patient achieves their best possible result.
Dr. Griffin, Dr. Curtis, and the rest of the experienced and highly-skilled team at the Griffin Center for Hair Restoration and The Griffin Center for Women’s Hair Loss are deeply committed to educating and utilizing the latest surgical and non-surgical hair restoration techniques to provide patients with natural-looking results. The first step to hair restoration is to identify the cause of hair loss. After an initial evaluation and diagnosis is made, Dr. Griffin and Dr. Curtis work with each patient to educate them on the various treatment options available and provide all the information needed to make a comfortable decision about achieving their desired results. After treatment options have been thoroughly discussed, Dr. Griffin and Dr. Curtis tailor the best treatment plan for each patient to help them look and feel their best.
Cosmetics – Colored sprays, rub on dyes or tattoos of the scalp are options used to camouflage hair loss.
Hairpiece – For instant hair loss coverage, hairpieces effectively provide dense, thick coverage. High-quality wigs provide painless coverage and can be secured to the hair by clips, weaving, snaps, surgical rings, glue or tape.
Topical Medication – Topical medications Rogaine® (2% minoxidil) and Extra-Strength Rogaine® (5% minoxidil) provide effective treatment in slowing down the balding process. Most effective for patients in the beginning stages of hair loss, with consistent daily use Rogaine® helps keep existing hair, promotes hair regrowth, making Rogaine® a beneficial non-surgical option for many patients. Another effective option for some patients is AQ Advanced Hair Complex, a topical serum which uses growth factors to restore and regenerate healthy hair follicles.
Finasteride (Proscar®/Propecia®) – Originally used to treat male pattern baldness, this FDA-approved oral medication has led to 30-40% hair regrowth among patients and even decreased the hair loss process. When combined with daily usage of Rogaine®, Finasteride’s effective showed even higher increase in results.
Viviscal® Professional – This unique oral supplement features a blend of nutrients, vitamins, and amino acids to nourish the follicles, leading to a fuller, thicker hair. Results are typically seen within three to six months.
Follicular Unit Grafting – Hair restoration technique that requires a donor strip to be taken from the area over the ears that extends to the back of the scalp. Individual follicular units (bundles containing one to four hairs) are skillfully dissected using a microscope from the donor strip before they are placed in tiny, custom-sized recipient openings to create a more gradual, natural hairline.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) with NeoGraft™ – A minimally invasive hair restoration procedure that individually removes natural follicular units containing one to four hairs per unit. These natural growing follicular units come from a donor site located at the back and sides of the scalp using NeoGraft™, an automated hair transplant device. NeoGraft™ safely removes grafts with a light suction before they are transplanted into tiny, custom-sized incisions in thinning or balding areas of the scalp.
Am I a good candidate for hair restoration?
Any man or woman who has experienced hair loss and has adequate donor hair to be transplanted may be a good candidate for hair restoration. Patients who have genetic hair loss or who have experienced hair loss from other causes (scars from traumatic injuries, accidents, burns, or cosmetic procedures such as facelifts) may also benefit from hair restoration procedures. Only after determining the cause of hair loss during a consultation and hair analysis can hair restoration surgery be considered an option. In general scarring hairloss conditions are not good hair transplant candidates.
Is hair loss the same in men and women?
Generally speaking, no. While some treatments for hair retention and restoration can work on both genders, different patients’ hair loss can have different causes. For instance, nearly all men who lose their hair have male pattern baldness, whereas women have a higher likelihood that their hair loss is also influenced by non-genetic factors, like hormonal changes, medications, scarring, illnesses, or certain medications. This is why Dr. Edmond Griffin and Dr. Ashley Curtis founded The Griffin Center for Women’s Hair Loss – to provide women with more specialized and comprehensive hair loss treatment.
What non-surgical hair loss treatment options are available?
There are currently two FDA-approved hair loss treatments available: Rogaine® (minoxidil) and Propecia® (Finasteride). Studies have shown the use of Finasteride has led to a 30-40% re-growth of hair, and a higher percentage of patients experienced decreased hair loss. Rogaine® has found its greatest effectiveness with those who are beginning to lose their hair because it actually slows down the balding process. During the last year, two studies have proven the effectiveness of topical Propecia®; now this medication can be administered by this route with a lower risk of the sexual side effects so feared by the oral form of Propecia®. Other non-surgical treatments available include red light therapy (including LaserCap™ and iGrow®), Procrinix and other customized topical medications, platelet rich plasma (PRP), Advanced Adipose-derived stem cell Protein Extract (AAPE), AQ Advanced Hair Complex, and an oral supplement called Viviscal® Professional.
What is Follicular Unit Grafting?
Follicular Unit Grafting is a hair transplantation technique where follicular units (a tiny bundle of usually 1-4 individual, natural growing hair follicles) are transplanted to balding areas of the scalp. Also known as the linear strip harvest, follicular unit grafting is the most efficient technique for quickly obtaining a large number of grafts. A linear strip of skin is taken from the donor site, typically the area over the ears that extends to the back of the scalp. Once the strip has been excised, The Griffin Center team of highly experienced technicians performs extremely detailed work of dissecting the individual follicular unit grafts from the tissue using microscope magnification to separate each follicular unit graft. The grafts are then transplanted by Dr. Griffin or Dr. Curtis into tiny custom-sized incisions in bald or thinning areas of the scalp. Because the hair is kept in its natural follicular units, it grows in the recipient areas in the most natural way due to customized incisions to provide a soft, natural look.
What are the benefits of using NeoGraft™ with follicular unit extraction?
There are many benefits of follicular unit extraction with NeoGraft™ which does not involve the strip excision from hair bearing areas. The procedure is therefore minimally invasive: the donor area must be shaved and is visible for at least two weeks until the hair regrows in the donor area. For every graft there is a tiny round opening made which is not closed but left open to heal. The NeoGraft™ openings are barely visible within two to three days and there is no linear scar as seen in the traditional strip harvest technique. There can be on careful inspection multiple round scars which can be apparent after several hair transplant sessions. Patients who prefer very short hairstyles, scar easily, have tight scalps or may have extensive donor scars from previous hair transplants that cannot be removed or revised may find follicular unit extraction with NeoGraft™ more appealing.
